Intern Insights - Ben Lin

Next up sharing his thoughts on interning at Stratum is Ben Lin.

Hi,

During the summer of 2021 I had the privilege of joining the Geotechnical Team at Stratum Consultants in my hometown of Tauranga as an Engineering Assistant. The team was dedicated yet lighthearted and always ready to help with any issues I encountered.

My work was mostly outdoor field work, logging boreholes and measuring soil strengths. After collecting data, we head back to the office and log the soil strengths and descriptions in an excel sheet. The collected data gives engineers a better idea on whether the ground is fit for construction.

I was able to put what I learned in my university course into practice such as borehole logging, soil testing and identification methods. Stratum being a multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy company allowed me to gain valuable insight into Civil, Structural, Geotechnical engineering disciplines. This will give me a better idea of what branch of Civil Engineering I would like to pursue.

Some enjoyable moments that I had over the summer were conducting soil tests in a paddock with a herd of alpacas and coming across interesting types of volcanic ashes such as the pumiceous, orangey Hauparu Tephra, chocolate coloured Hamilton Ash.

I had a blast spending my summer with Stratum and would like to thank them for giving me this opportunity.

Regards,

Ben
